It is commonly known that coffee is a very strong stimulant. Thus, when one feels drowsy, he drinks a cup of coffee. It is one solution to jump start one's systems when it the systems are at the point of resting. Moreover, caffeine is a natural pain killer. However, one negative side effect of this dependency on caffeine.

During the1920's, German scientists discovered that a caffeine solution could open the bile ducts. They experimented on animals and found that caffeine promotes the production of bile in the liver of these animals.

However, it was Dr. Max Gerson, who used caffeine clinically as part of a general detoxification program for tuberculosis and cancer. He claimed that caffeine enters the hemorrhoidal, then to the portal vein, and eventually to the liver. Thus, he cautions that coffee enemas are not for the normal functioning of bowel but for the stimulation of the liver. And based on the belief on the caffeine could stimulate the liver and gall bladder to release bile, he theorized that coffee enema could help cure cancer patients. He eventually developed the Gerson Therapy program which includes vegan meals, fresh fruit and vegetable juices and snacks as well as iodine and potassium supplements and coffee enemas. In fact, in 1958, he published his methods and findings along with fifty cases of cured cancer patients in a book entitled, A Cancer Therapy: Results of 50 cases.

However, despite his claims of success, still many of his colleagues declared his therapy ineffective. But no matter, many desperate high profile cancer patients and medical practitioners were drawn in by his success claims. However, the US National Cancer Institute reviewed the 50 cancer cases he claimed to have been successfully cured and found no real evidence that his claims were accurate.

But despite that, many people still perform coffee enemas. Yet again, there are no definite evidences that the procedure is indeed beneficial. On the other hand, there are several complications that are believed to be caused by having coffee enemas. These complications include caffeine dependence, electrolyte imbalance, dehydration, perforation of the intestine walls, and even intestinal burns due to the temperature of the caffeine solution introduced in the bowel.

Aside from coffee solutions, others use tea or other cleansing herbs instead of plain saline solution in their enemas or colonics. However, many actually advise against the use of these ingredients and encourage the use of plain sterilized or purified water in the enema and colonic procedures instead. Some people may have some allergic reactions to particular herbs and could prove dangerous.

Also, it should be noted that a colonic irrigation procedure is different from enema. Colon hydrotherapy is a more intensive procedure than enema and must preferably be administered by a trained professional and with less frequency compared to an enema. Moreover, these procedures are not advisable to people who recently had surgery as well as those with medical conditions such as ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, colon cancer, and other gastrointestinal diseases.
